Marie Taylor-Cyphers LLM, BA has extensive litigation experience in the appellate courts and trial jurisdiction within New Zealand.
Marie represents people facing the most serious charges in our criminal justice system; those carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, including importation of methamphetamine and murder. She is also available to assist with cases at the lower end of the scale where people who have never been before the courts before are seeking diversion or to have no conviction entered against their name. Marie retrained in law, having worked in marketing and business strategy, including for PWC. She has a thorough understanding of financial and commercial transactions which is a strong advantage in defending allegations of organised crime, money laundering, and importation.
Marie fights tirelessly to secure you the best possible outcome. She will fearlessly defends your rights, while protecting the integrity of the process. Marie recognises that for each of us there is a wider group of people and whānau impacted by what we go through — she fosters those relationships to ensure people are taken care of.

OUTSIDE OF COURT
Marie is Head of Verus Chambers (Auckland). She is a contributing author to Adams on Criminal Law (Youth Justice). She is a member of New Zealand Bar Association committees including Te Ao Māori Komiti and the Criminal Committee including proposed legislative change and legal aid review work. She is passionate about mentoring and professional development and has lectured in fourth year LLB papers at the University of Otago including sentencing, criminal justice and advocacy. She is regularly asked to deliver lectures to other lawyers for continuing professional development. Marie is regularly sought out by national media (including RadioNZ, StuffNZ and Newshub) to provide insight regarding legal issues at the forefront of the sector.
OUTSIDE OF LAW
Marie is a qualified piano teacher and is working towards becoming a Pilates instructor. She speaks French, some Māori, some German, and basic Italian. She is happiest in the sea under the hot sun, preferably in the South of France. Marie was born in Hawaï and has Blackfoot (Native American) heritage.
